Residents of Northern California have suffered a horrific month battling relentless wildfires, destroying thousands of homes and businesses and taking the lives of numerous people. Due to the recent catastrophe, the IRS has implemented a new regulation permitting the extension of tax filings until January 31, 2018.

The IRS is currently providing relief to nine California counties: Butte, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada,
Orange, Solano, Sonoma, and Yuba. Residents and businesses in these counties, including firefighters and relief workers who live in other regions, will be eligible for this extension. As the fires continue to develop, the IRS will proceed with monitoring the situation, leaving an opportunity for more counties to become eligible.

Taxes that will be waived from the original deadline of October 8, 2017, now due January 31, 2018 include:
  • January 16, 2018 deadlines for quarterly estimated tax payments.
  • Individual tax filers for 2016 income that received a tax filing extension to October 16, 2017.
  • For businesses, the Oct. 31 deadlines for quarterly payroll and excise tax returns.
  • Late deposit penalties for federal payroll and excise tax deposits normally due after Oct. 8 and before Oct. 23, if deposits are made by October 23, 2017.
